Winner:
"The
Sea" by Coleman Barnhard
The
Sea
is like the
bluest thing in
the world even
bluer than the
sky shining
so bright
saltier than
French fries
your wildlife
so great
the sea so beautiful.
TEEN
Winner:
"Work
Day" by Jessica Lance
A hard days work is born again
Whenever the sun my rise
A farmer's work it never ends
Until the evening dies
Packed together the buildings stand
To greet white collared men
Working hours seem long and bland
But never like back then |
ADULT
Winner:
"Overdue"
by Peter Lance
The book you sent a notice on
Is one which I have thought upon
And therefore I've looked high and low
But where it is I just don't know
The book entitled "Once a Mouse"
Is simply nowhere in the house
Or in the car or in the truck
In finding it I've had no luck
So sadly I must write and say
I can't return your book today
To
keep a book would be a sin
But there's a chance I turned it in
It might be that I brought it back
Along with others, in a stack
So maybe you could take a look
To see if I've returned the book
'Cause here's a thought I've had myself
What if it's laying on your shelf?
To charge a fine would be unjust
If it's just sitting, growing dust
And
if you find it waiting there
Tucked in between another pair
I'd like it if you'd waive the fines
(Which you describe on many signs
As punishment for those who read
But somehow never seem to heed
The date for something to return)
You'd think it's something that we'd learn
Replacing something that gets lost
Is nothing like a fine, for cost
